Fatal Shooting Claims Another Life in North Kivu Displacement Camp
A young man has tragically lost his life after being struck by a bullet while sleeping in his cabin at the Kibati displaced persons camp in Nyiragongo territory, North Kivu.
Thierry Gasasiro, a local civil society rapporteur, reported that the camp experienced multiple hours of gunfire during the night, amidst the presence of FARDC soldiers, Wazalendo militiamen, and armed bandits.
Gasasiro revealed that the victim was hit by a bullet of unknown origin, highlighting the escalating insecurity in Nyiragongo since the onset of the M23/RDF conflict.
Incidents of murder, theft, rape, and kidnapping have become commonplace, with nightly gunfire echoing across the territory.
Expressing condemnation for the tragic event, Gasasiro urged authorities to prioritize the safety of displaced individuals, who continue to be vulnerable targets of the ongoing conflict fueled by Rwanda and its M23 proxies.
The incident follows a deadly attack on displaced people’s sites in Goma on May 3, where M23/RDF rebels dropped bombs, resulting in 18 casualties, according to an updated report by OCHA.
